Virgin Voyages prohibits weapons, illegal drugs, CBD and marijuana (even medical), hard liquor, spirits and beer, candles, drones, hoverboards, hand and power tools, and multi-plug power strips or extension cords (which are held for the ship’s electrician to inspect). You can bring two 750mL bottles of wine per cabin, sealed non-perishable snacks, canned or boxed non-alcoholic drinks, and hair tools like curling irons, straighteners and dryers.
That’s the short version. Below is the full allowed-vs-prohibited breakdown, straight from Virgin Voyages’ official policy, plus the advisor notes we give our own sailors so nothing gets confiscated at the terminal. We’ve sailed Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady, so these are the questions we actually get asked before every voyage.

What items are prohibited on Virgin Voyages?
According to Virgin Voyages’ official Prohibited Items list (current as of October 2026), the banned categories are broad. The headline items our sailors ask about most:
- Drugs and controlled substances — illegal drugs, non-prescribed controlled substances, and all marijuana and CBD products, including medically prescribed marijuana. Virgin’s ships are foreign-flagged and sail internationally, so a state-legal card doesn’t apply at sea.
- Weapons — all firearms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary devices, and firearm replicas. Knives or blades longer than 4 inches are out too.
- Open flames and fire risks — candles, incense, and anything with an open flame.
- Electrical gear — extension cords and multi-plug power strips are “subject to inspection and approval by the Ship’s Electrician,” so they’re commonly held at check-in. Hand and power tools are flatly prohibited.
- Sports and recreation equipment — baseball bats, hockey sticks, skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates, surfboards, bicycles, scooters, scuba tanks, and remote-controlled helicopters, airplanes or drones.
- Dangerous chemicals — bleach, ammonia, pesticides, spray paint, tear gas, pepper spray, compressed gas cartridges and fire extinguishers (wheelchair batteries are the notable exception).
- Marine souvenirs — seashells, corals and similar marine items can’t be brought aboard.
- Communication hardware — satellite phones, personal networking gear like Starlink units and routers, EPIRBs and HAM radios.
Can you bring alcohol on Virgin Voyages?
Mostly no. Virgin Voyages states plainly that “alcoholic beverages, hard liquor, spirits, and beer are not permitted to be brought on board.” The one exception is wine: each cabin may bring two 750mL bottles of wine in carry-on bags. There’s no loophole for duty-free spirits — liquor bought in port or at the terminal shop is held and returned at the end of your voyage.
The good news is you rarely need to smuggle anything. Virgin’s fares already include soft drinks, drip coffee, tea, and still and sparkling water, and most sailors cover cocktails with a prepaid Bar Tab rather than a traditional drink package. We break down exactly how that works in our Virgin Voyages alcohol policy and drink package guides.
Can you bring your own drinks and snacks?
Within limits, yes. Virgin allows “small quantities of water, dietary supplement drinks, non-alcoholic beer, or soft drinks in boxes and cans” in hand luggage — but drinks in bottles, glass or plastic, are not permitted. That single-container rule trips up a lot of first-timers who pack a case of bottled water.
For food, sealed and pre-packaged non-perishable snacks in reasonable personal quantities are fine. Homemade, pre-cooked, perishable foods and open containers are not. If you travel with medications or have dietary restrictions, a small cooler is allowed specifically for those items.
Can you bring a curling iron, straightener or hair dryer?
Yes. This is the question we get most, and the answer is reassuring: curling irons, hair straighteners and hair dryers are all explicitly permitted onboard. The “open flame” ban is about candles and incense, not your styling tools. Every cabin also has a hair dryer, so you can often leave yours at home to save packing space — see our full Virgin Voyages packing list for what’s already waiting in your cabin.
Are power strips and extension cords allowed?
This is the gray area. Virgin lists “extension cords and multi-plug power strips” as “subject to inspection and approval by the Ship’s Electrician,” which in practice means they’re frequently pulled from bags at the terminal and held for the sailing. Cruise lines treat surge-protected strips as a genuine fire hazard at sea.
Our advice: skip the household power strip. Virgin’s cabins have enough outlets and USB ports for a couple of travelers, and a small, non-surge-protected USB charging cube or a simple USB hub will get through screening far more reliably than a six-outlet strip. Virgin’s list doesn’t call out standard phone chargers or small personal power banks, so those are generally no problem — it’s the multi-plug strips and extension cords that get flagged.
What should you pack instead?
The easiest way to avoid a confiscation line at embarkation is to build your bag around what Virgin wants you to bring: swimwear, a dressy-casual outfit for dinner, comfortable shoes, your medications in their original packaging, a refillable water bottle (to fill onboard, not to carry full), and your two bottles of wine if you’re a wine drinker. Virgin is a cashless, tech-forward line, so your Sailor App and a credit card on file handle everything else.

Virgin Voyages prohibited items: FAQ
Can you bring a Yeti or cooler on Virgin Voyages?
Coolers and ice chests are prohibited except when used for storing medications or items related to dietary restrictions. A small, soft cooler for insulin or special-diet foods is fine; a party cooler for drinks is not.
Can you bring bottled water on Virgin Voyages?
No. Drinks in bottles — glass or plastic — are not permitted. You can bring small quantities of water in boxes or cans in your hand luggage, and still and sparkling water is included onboard, so bring a refillable bottle and fill it at the ship instead.
Is CBD allowed on Virgin Voyages?
No. Virgin Voyages prohibits CBD products along with marijuana, including medically prescribed marijuana, and other controlled substances. Because the ships sail internationally, state-level legalization doesn’t apply onboard.
Can you bring your own alcohol on a Virgin Voyages cruise?
Only wine — two 750mL bottles per cabin in your carry-on. Hard liquor, spirits and beer cannot be brought aboard, and duty-free liquor is held and returned at the end of the voyage.
Are marijuana and vapes allowed on Virgin Voyages?
Marijuana in any form (including medical) and CBD are prohibited. Virgin Voyages does permit smoking and vaping only in designated outdoor areas; see our policy guides for the current smoking zones.
What happens if you bring a prohibited item?
Items flagged at the terminal scanner are either confiscated or held and returned at the end of your sailing (as with duty-free liquor and power strips). Genuinely illegal items — drugs, weapons — can result in denied boarding and are reported to authorities, so it’s never worth the risk.
Policy details are drawn from Virgin Voyages’ official Prohibited Items list and confirmed by the Pixie Vacations Virgin Voyages team. Rules can change — when in doubt about a specific item, ask us before you pack.
