Your first hours on a Virgin Voyages ship set the tone for the entire cruise. After sailing multiple times on every ship in the fleet, I have embarkation day dialed in. Here is exactly what to do from the moment you arrive at the terminal to the sailaway party.

Before You Arrive

Download the Virgin Voyages app and complete online check-in at least 48 hours before sailing. Upload your passport photo, take your embarkation selfie, add a payment method, and select your arrival time window. The app is your room key, restaurant reservation system, and onboard guide all in one — so get comfortable with it before you board.

If you are sailing from PortMiami, plan to arrive during your selected time window. Earlier is not always better — the ship does not leave without you as long as you are within your window. I personally prefer the second time slot because the initial rush has passed and the restaurants are not yet packed for lunch.

Terminal Arrival and Check-In

The Virgin Voyages terminal experience is unlike any other cruise line. There are no long queues or crowded lobbies. The check-in process is designed to feel like arriving at a boutique hotel, not a cattle call. Your luggage gets tagged and taken by porters when you pull up. Tip them a few dollars per bag.

Inside the terminal, scan your app at the kiosk to verify your identity. The whole process takes about 5-10 minutes on a good day. You will receive a wristband that serves as your boarding pass and room key for the first few hours until the app activates fully.

First 30 Minutes on Board

Do not go to your cabin first. Your cabin probably is not ready yet and your luggage will not arrive for a few hours. Instead, head straight to one of the restaurants for lunch. The Galley (the food hall on Deck 15) is the easiest option — grab whatever looks good from the various stations. It is all included.

My personal move: I go to The Pizza Place on Deck 16 for a quick slice with an ocean view, then grab a drink at the Dock House bar right by the pool. You are officially on vacation.

Explore the Ship

After lunch, take 30 minutes to walk the ship from bow to stern. Learn where the key venues are: the main pool on Deck 15, the restaurants on Decks 6-7, The Manor nightclub on Deck 5, and the Athletic Club (gym) on Deck 11. Virgin Voyages ships are smaller than Royal Caribbean megas — you can learn the layout quickly.

While exploring, open the app and book your restaurant reservations for the voyage. Popular spots like The Test Kitchen and Gunbae fill up fast. I always recommend booking at least one dinner at The Wake (the steakhouse) on a sea day — the sunset views from the stern are unreal.

Muster Drill

Virgin Voyages has an electronic muster drill you complete through the app. Go to your assigned muster station, scan in, listen to the brief safety overview, and you are done in under 5 minutes. No standing in the sun for 45 minutes like on other lines. This is one of many ways VV has modernized the cruise experience.

Sailaway Party

Do not miss the sailaway. Head to the pool deck about 30 minutes before departure. The DJ starts spinning, drinks are flowing, and there is genuine energy as the ship pulls away from port. It is one of my favorite moments on any cruise — the collective excitement of 2,700 sailors realizing vacation has officially begun.

First Night Dinner

Your first dinner sets expectations for the entire voyage. If you did not pre-book, check the app for available tables. My recommendation for night one: Pink Agave (upscale Mexican) or Extra Virgin (Italian). Both are crowd-pleasers and show off how different VV dining is from traditional cruise ship buffets.

Remember: all dining is included. There are no specialty dining upcharges. Order whatever you want, try multiple appetizers, get dessert at every course. This is what your fare covers.

After Dinner

Check the app for the evening entertainment schedule. The Red Room shows are genuinely Broadway-caliber — I was blown away the first time. Duel Reality and Never Sleep Alone are two of the standout productions. After the show, The Manor nightclub opens up with DJ sets that go late into the night.

Embarkation Day Pro Tips

Pack a carry-on bag with everything you need for the first few hours: swimsuit, sunscreen, medications, phone charger, and a light layer for the air conditioning. Your checked luggage might not arrive until 4-5 PM.

Press the Shake for Champagne button in your cabin when you first arrive. Every cabin has one. It is a VV rite of passage.

Buy the Bar Tab early if you plan to drink. The sooner you activate it, the more value you get. Use our Bar Tab Calculator to see if it is worth it for your drinking habits.

Do not over-plan Day 1. The biggest mistake first-timers make is scheduling every minute. Let yourself wander, discover, and settle in. The ship is not going anywhere without you.
