When you book a Virgin Voyages cruise, one of the first decisions you will face is choosing your VoyageFair fare type: Base, Essential, or Premium. Each tier adds more inclusions and flexibility to your booking. After helping hundreds of clients navigate this decision, here is exactly what each tier includes and which one I recommend for different types of travelers.

Base Fare

The Base fare is the entry-level price and it already includes more than most cruise lines charge extra for. You get all dining at 20+ restaurants, Basic WiFi (1 device per Sailor), group fitness classes, all entertainment, and dining reservations opening 15 days before your sailing. Important gratuity update: As of VoyageFair Choices (Oct 2025), gratuities are now a separate line item — pre-pay at $20 per Sailor per day (saves ~10%) or pay onboard at $22 per Sailor per day. That alone is a significant value compared to Royal Caribbean or Norwegian where you are paying $50-80 per person per day in extras.

What you do NOT get with Base: the fare is non-refundable, you cannot change your sailing dates, and you do not get any onboard credit or drink packages included.

Best for: Budget-conscious sailors who are 100% committed to their travel dates and do not need flexibility. If you know you are going and you are not planning to cancel, Base saves you the most money upfront.

Essential Fare

Essential adds meaningful flexibility and value on top of Base. You get everything in Base plus Classic WiFi (faster than Basic), a 45-day dining reservation window, the ability to change guest names, and a Future Voyage Credit option if you need to change plans.

Those benefits alone — especially the cancellation flexibility and earlier dining reservation window — usually justify the modest price bump over Base. And when a booking promo layers Sailor Loot on top, that onboard credit can go toward Bar Tab, shore excursions, or the spa. This is the tier I recommend most often.

Best for: Most travelers. The cancellation flexibility alone is worth the modest price increase. Life happens — work emergencies, illness, weather — and knowing you can change your dates or get a Future Voyage Credit provides real peace of mind. If you are booking 6+ months out, Essential is almost always the right call.

Premium Fare

Premium is the top tier and includes everything in Essential plus: Premium Wi-Fi for two devices per Sailor (streaming-capable), a built-in $15 per Sailor per day Bar Tab credit (roughly $75 per Sailor on a 5-night voyage), a 60-day dining reservation window (vs. 45 days for Essential), and a priority pre-voyage support line. Premium pricing runs approximately $45 per person per night above Essential.

The value of Premium depends heavily on what promotions Virgin Voyages is running when you book. During wave season (January-March), Premium fares often include the Bar Tab for free, which is a $300+ value. Wave Season 2026 ended March 31. The current Spring Savings 2026 promotion (April 1 — May 28) layers Instant Savings up to $1,000 plus 70% off the 2nd Sailor. Premium fares retain the included $15/sailor/day Bar Tab credit on top of those discounts. See the Deals Tracker for the latest active offers.

Best for: Sailors who want the full worry-free experience. If you plan to drink, use the spa, and want the fastest Wi-Fi, Premium often pays for itself through the included perks. Especially worth it during promotional periods when extra bonuses stack up.

Which Should You Choose? Steve’s Recommendation

I book Essential for about 70% of my clients and Premium for the other 30%. I rarely recommend Base unless someone is on a strict budget and absolutely certain about their travel dates.

Here is my quick decision framework:

Choose Base if: You are price-sensitive, your dates are locked, and you do not anticipate any need to change plans.

Choose Essential if: You want flexibility, you are booking more than 3 months out, or this is your first VV cruise and you want a safety net.

Choose Premium if: There is a current promotion that includes the Bar Tab or spa credits, OR you were already planning to buy those add-ons separately. In that case, Premium often costs less than buying Base + add-ons individually.
