Virgin Voyages calls at Costa Maya, Mexico on its Western Caribbean sailings from Miami, usually docking from about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s a purpose-built cruise port on the Mayan Riviera: you can swim in the free pier pool, taxi to Mahahual’s beach for free, book a Shore Thing to Chacchoben’s Mayan ruins or the world’s second-longest barrier reef, or just stroll the artisan market. Here’s exactly what to expect and how to spend your day.

What is the Costa Maya cruise port like?

Costa Maya is one of the more relaxed stops on a Virgin Voyages Western Caribbean itinerary. The port is a dedicated cruise complex — ships dock right at the pier (up to four ships at once), and it’s a 10–15 minute walk from the gangway to the port square, with a free shuttle running when ships are in.

Inside the gated port village you’ll find a large saltwater pool with complimentary loungers and a swim-up bar, an artisan market selling hammocks, vanilla, chocolate and hot sauce, restaurants and bars, a free Danza de los Voladores (flying-men) performance in the square, and Aviarius, a walk-through bird attraction on rope bridges (around $14 for adults, $12 for kids). Virgin itself describes the wider area as “raw and less-curated than other ports in the region” — Costa Maya feels a bit like Tulum before it became Tu-lum.

One honest note: longtime cruisers nicknamed this stop “Costa Maybe,” because weather and sea conditions can occasionally force a cancellation. It’s rare, but it’s why we never tell clients to pre-pay a non-cruise-line tour they can’t get refunded.

How long is Virgin Voyages in Costa Maya, and which sailings stop there?

On most sailings the ship is docked for a generous full day — the 6-night Mexico & Bimini Beach Club voyage on Resilient Lady, for example, is in Costa Maya from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (as of the published October 2026 schedule). That’s plenty of time for a beach break, a ruins tour, or a reef snorkel and still be back aboard comfortably.

Costa Maya shows up on several Virgin itineraries out of Miami, typically paired with Cozumel and/or the Beach Club at Bimini:

  • 5-night Mayan Sol — Costa Maya + the Beach Club at Bimini.
  • 5-night Riviera Maya — Costa Maya + Cozumel.
  • 6-night Mexico & Bimini Beach Club — Costa Maya, Cozumel and Bimini.

These sail on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady depending on the season. If you’re still choosing dates, our Virgin Voyages Caribbean itineraries guide breaks down every Western Caribbean route and what each one costs.

Can you walk to the beach in Costa Maya, or do you need an excursion?

You don’t have to book anything to reach the sand. The nearest public beach is in Mahahual, a laid-back fishing town about a 10-minute taxi ride (roughly $5–$8 a cab — confirm the fare before you climb in, as there’s no Uber or Lyft here) or a 40–45 minute walk from the pier. Playa Mahahual and the seafront Malecón boardwalk are both free to use, lined with casual bars and seafood spots.

If you’d rather have a lounger, shade and food handled, Mahahual’s beach clubs sell day packages: Malecon21 (packages roughly $40–$249 per person, with a sheltered natural swimming pool), plus local favorites like Chunky Monkey, Pez Quadro and La Chilangaloense. One caveat we always flag: seaweed can wash up on the closest beaches depending on the season, so if pristine water is non-negotiable, a boat-based snorkel tour or the port pool may serve you better.

Virgin Voyages Shore Things in Costa Maya

Virgin’s in-house excursions are called Shore Things, and Costa Maya’s lineup leans into ruins, reef and beach. Here are the headline options and who each suits best (prices are Virgin’s published “from” rates and change by sailing):

Shore Thing Length / from Best for
Chacchoben Tour & Beach Break ~5 hrs Ruins and beach in one day (grilled lunch + open bar)
Glass Bottom Boat & Snorkel ~3 hrs Seeing the reef without being a strong swimmer
Kohunlich Mayan Ruin Expedition ~7 hrs / $150 History buffs who want the big, remote site
Jeep & Beach Adventure ~3.5 hrs / $125 Active couples who want to self-drive off-road
River Tubing at Seven Colors Lagoon ~5.5 hrs / $145 A slow float at the famous Bacalar lagoon
Mayan Wellness Retreat with a Xaman Full day A ceremonial spa day, not a beach or ruins trip

Shore Things are convenient because the ship waits for them — if a Virgin excursion runs late, you won’t be left behind. Independent operators (often cheaper) are available at the pier too, but the risk is yours, so we only recommend them to experienced port-day travelers. Our full Virgin Voyages Shore Things guide explains how booking, pricing and refunds work.

Are the Mayan ruins and the reef worth it?

If you’ve never seen a Mayan site, yes. Chacchoben is the closest major ruins complex to Costa Maya — settled more than 2,000 years ago, with the climbable Gran Basamento pyramid — and a typical visit runs 3–4 hours including transport. Farther out are Kohunlich (21 acres, famous for its Temple of the Masks) and Dzibanché, both better suited to a longer excursion.

In the water, Costa Maya sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-longest barrier reef system in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — so the glass-bottom-boat and snorkel tours deliver genuinely good coral and tropical fish. For a shorter stop, the free pier pool and a wander through the artisan market are a perfectly pleasant low-effort day.

What about Cozumel, the port next door?

On the 6-night and some 5-night sailings, Costa Maya is paired with Cozumel — the busier, more developed Mexican island, with world-class diving, beach clubs and the Playa del Carmen/Tulum mainland a ferry away. Think of Costa Maya as the rustic, relaxed port and Cozumel as the polished one. Between them you get two very different flavors of Mexico on a single Virgin sailing.

Mexico is a visa-free stop for U.S. citizens on a closed-loop cruise, but we still recommend sailing with a passport — see our Virgin Voyages passport requirements guide for the details.

Virgin Voyages Costa Maya FAQ

Is Costa Maya worth getting off the ship?

For most Sailors, yes. If you want a Mayan-ruins tour, a reef snorkel or a real Mexican beach, Costa Maya delivers all three. If you just want a relaxed day, the free pier pool, swim-up bar and artisan market are enough to make getting off worthwhile without booking anything.

Is it safe to visit Costa Maya right now?

The cruise port and Mahahual’s tourist strip are considered very safe for day visitors. Costa Maya sits in Quintana Roo, which carries a standard “exercise increased caution” travel advisory, so the usual rules apply: stick to the port, Mahahual and organized excursions, use official taxis, and carry small cash (pesos or dollars) since many vendors don’t take cards.

What excursions does Virgin Voyages offer in Costa Maya?

Virgin’s Shore Things in Costa Maya include the Chacchoben Tour & Beach Break, a Glass Bottom Boat & Snorkel tour, the Kohunlich Mayan Ruin Expedition (from $150), a Jeep & Beach Adventure (from $125), River Tubing at the Seven Colors Lagoon in Bacalar (from $145), and a full-day Mayan Wellness Retreat with a Xaman. Prices are “from” rates and vary by sailing.

Can you walk to the beach from the Costa Maya cruise port?

Not directly to a swimmable beach — the port itself has a pool but no beach. The nearest public beach is in Mahahual, about a 40–45 minute walk or a 10-minute, roughly $5–$8 taxi ride away. Playa Mahahual and the Malecón boardwalk are free to use.

Does Virgin Voyages dock or tender at Costa Maya?

Virgin Voyages docks directly at the Costa Maya pier — no tender required. It’s a short 10–15 minute walk (or free shuttle ride) from the gangway to the port village.

How much time do you need in Costa Maya?

A full in-port day (commonly around 9 a.m.–6 p.m.) is comfortable for one headline activity — a ruins tour, a beach club, or a reef snorkel — plus time in the port complex. Longer excursions like Kohunlich or Bacalar use most of the day, so pick one and don’t overschedule.
