The short answer: For most sailors on a 4–5 night Caribbean sailing, $300 per person is the sweet spot. But the real answer depends on how you drink — and whether you know how to game the bonus tiers.
One of the most common questions we see from first-time Virgin Voyages sailors is “how much bar tab should I buy?” It’s a fair question. Unlike traditional cruise lines that sell all-or-nothing drink packages at a flat daily rate, Virgin Voyages uses a pre-paid credit system called the Bar Tab. You load money before you sail, VV throws in a bonus on top, and you spend it on any premium drinks on board or at the Bimini Beach Club.
The catch? Unused credit is non-refundable and disappears when your voyage ends. Load too much and you’re throwing money overboard. Load too little and you miss out on free bonus credit.
Here’s how to get it right.
The 2026 Bar Tab Bonus Tiers
Virgin Voyages offers five pre-purchase levels, and the bonus percentage climbs as you load more:
- $200 → $25 bonus → $225 total (12.5% return)
- $300 → $50 bonus → $350 total (16.7% return)
- $500 → $100 bonus → $600 total (20.0% return)
- $750 → $175 bonus → $925 total (23.3% return)
- $1,000 → $250 bonus → $1,250 total (25.0% return)
The higher you go, the better the return. But the key is matching your tier to your actual drinking habits — not just chasing the biggest bonus.
How to Estimate Your Spending
Cocktails on Virgin Voyages typically run $13–$18 each. Glasses of wine are $10–$16. Craft beers land around $8–$10. A couple having two cocktails at dinner, a glass of wine at lunch, and a nightcap is looking at roughly $50–$70 per person per day.
On a 5-night sailing, that puts a moderate drinker at $250–$350 total — which makes the $300 tier the natural fit for most sailors. You get a solid $50 bonus without the risk of overspending.
If you and your partner like to close down The Manor or spend long afternoons at the Bimini Beach Club bar, the $500 tier (with its $100 bonus) starts making a lot of sense.
The Pro Move: Sailing Club Members, Pay Attention
Here’s a detail most guides miss. If you’re a Sailing Club member at the Sea-Blazer tier or above, the $300 increment gets a boosted bonus — reportedly up to $125 instead of the standard $50. That’s a 41.7% return, which actually beats the per-dollar return of the $1,000 tier for non-members.
If you qualify, buying multiple $300 increments can outperform a single large purchase. It’s one of the best-kept money hacks in the Virgin Voyages loyalty program.
Three Rules for Bar Tab Success
1. Always pre-purchase. You can only buy Bar Tab up to 24 hours before your voyage. You cannot add funds once you’re on board, and you won’t get any bonus on money loaded too late.
2. Remember what’s already free. Virgin Voyages includes basic beverages in your fare — drip coffee, tea, water, and sodas. You only need Bar Tab for cocktails, specialty coffees, premium teas, wine, beer, and mocktails. If you’re mostly a coffee-and-water person, you might not need a Bar Tab at all.
3. Watch for promo windows. Wave Season (January–March) and Black Friday often bring enhanced Bar Tab bonuses. If you’re booking a 2026 or 2027 sailing during these windows, you’ll sometimes see offers like a complimentary Bar Tab bundled with your cabin fare. Earlier this year, VV ran an 80% off second sailor promotion that included up to a $400 Bar Tab.
Bottom Line
The Virgin Voyages Bar Tab system is one of the better drink deals at sea — you only pay for what you’ll actually drink, and the bonuses reward you for planning ahead. For a typical 4–5 night sailing, start at $300 per person and adjust from there. Heavy drinkers should look at the $500 tier. Light drinkers or non-drinkers can skip it entirely and enjoy the complimentary beverages that are already included.
