Athens International Airport (ATH) is about 50 km (31 miles) from Piraeus — roughly a one-hour trip with no traffic, longer at rush hour. You have four solid options, from cheapest to most seamless:

The metro is genuinely good now: the Blue Line was extended to Piraeus, so you can ride from the airport to Piraeus Station without changing trains, roughly every 36 minutes from early morning until late evening (fare and schedule per the official Athens transport guide). If you are arriving on cruise day with two big suitcases, though, we usually steer Sailors toward a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer — the last thing you want is to wrestle luggage on a crowded metro when embarkation is ticking.

Should you arrive in Athens a day early?

Yes — fly in at least one full day before your cruise. This is the single best piece of advice we give anyone sailing from Athens, for three reasons. First, transatlantic flights from the U.S. almost always connect through another European hub, and a single delayed connection can mean missing the ship — Resilient Lady will not wait. Second, arriving early lets you shake off jet lag and actually enjoy Athens instead of stumbling to the port. Third, Piraeus and central Athens both have excellent hotels, so a pre-cruise night is easy to arrange.

Stay in the Plaka or Syntagma neighborhoods if you want to be steps from the Acropolis, or in Piraeus itself if you would rather be a short ride from the ship on embarkation morning. Either way, one night turns a stressful travel day into the start of the trip.

What to do in Athens before or after your cruise

Athens rewards even a single extra day. The obvious must-see is the Acropolis and the Parthenon — go early or late to beat the heat and the crowds — followed by the excellent Acropolis Museum. Wander the Plaka district’s tavernas, climb Lycabettus Hill for sunset, and browse the Ancient Agora and Monastiraki flea market.
